THE EXHIBITION

Overview

War embodies the ultimate failure of humanity. Yet it persists through generations; even today, images from Afghanistan present Canadians with irreconcilable feelings of resigned necessity and ethical horror. Robert Capa's masterful photographs of The Spanish Civil War portrayed the brutality of battle while exposing a poignant yearning for civilian normalcy among its idealistic combatants.

Front Lines, inspired by Capa's indelible scenes from the first 'media war', reminds us that the camaraderie of men drawn by a sense of duty to an imperfect moral calling can reveal fleeting moments of disarming grace bound by unspeakable tragedy.

"California Slim" 15oz. natural deep indigo dyed, redline Japanese selvage denim. Shrink to fit slim straight leg.
Sized from 30" to 38" waist. All sizes have a 38" inseam length. Blue Chambray waistband and pocket bags. Two tone gold chain stitching. Angled belt loops. Bar tacking at all points of strain. Limited edition of 27 numbered pairs.

"Colt" D-pocket, club jacket. 1930's sportswear inspired. Trim fit. Deep dark green cowhide leather sleeves, Cats eye button front, 24oz. Melton wool body. Cotton flannel Black Watch plaid lining.
Rib collar, cuff and waistband. This is the same jacket style as the point blanket one off bomber we designed for the Hudson's Bay Co. Heritage collaboration.

A fresh new batch of Klaxon Howl shirts have arrived. Three styles are old favorites made up in new fabrics and colours and one is being seen for the first time. Using our tried and true manufacturing techniques, finishes and fabrics of old. The first is the "Uncle Sam" based on a shirt in our archive from the late 1940's. Black chambray and a grey Heritage poplin are the two current colours offered. Like most of our shirting both are 100% cotton and are pre shrunk. A recent purchase of a new triple chainstitch machine adds a new level of quality a feel. The original "Uncle Sam" can be seen in the 1951 film "Submarine Command" starring a Klaxon favorite William Holden. The "Utility" shirt is another classic U.S.N. inspired shirt. This batch is done in a 6oz. washed denim with contrast stitching and buttons.The "Jett Rink" shirt is named after James Dean's character in the epic film Giant. This style of Tobacco pocket shirt is wore by him when Jett strikes oil and his life is suddenly changed.You can also see this shirt being wore by Gary Cooper in the early scenes of Frank Capra's film "Meet John Doe"The last and newest style is called the "Vent 'n' Yoke" shirt for obvious reasons. Three embroidered eyelets are applied to each yoke section of the shirt for added ventilation. This style is made up in vintage black salvage chambray and a dark indigo 6oz. denim both with contrast stitching. Two more styles are in production both will come in multiple colours and cloths. These should be in store for the end of July. You'll love em, sure as little green apples.

To get there just go to the corner of Queen and Manning go north to the first laneway behind Delphic make a right & we are 5 doors in. The new space is an 1860's coach house that has been transformed into unique modern retail environment.

Our inspirations come from the spirit and icons of the past. Men who toil and the clothes that protect them. Frontiersmen and prospectors, Soldiers and Sailors, Aviators and Highwaymen, American Indians and Cattlemen and the film idols that portrayed them. We study and reference our ever growing archive of vintage garments, books and films for details, fit, fabrics and finishes. Creating unique clothing with a nostalgic, ardent feel. Striving to achieve imperfect beauty through the use of raw, honest materials and non standardised details and proportions. Giving men a new outlook on dressing. Style over fashion.

We are extremely proud of the fact that all designs are produced in small batches locally using old construction techniques on Union Special sewing machines and vintage fabrics and notions when ever we can. This type of manufacturing results in extra rugged wears. Seams are chainstiched and interlocked, points of strain are bar tacked and shirt tails are gusseted for added strength. Selvage denim, cotton chambray, melton wool, chino cloth and waxed cottons all add to the genuine, natural feeling of the clothes.

Klaxon Howl 2005

Klaxon Howl grew out of a love of history and a vast collection of military vintage clothing. Its doors opened September 2005 in Toronto as a retail shop offering a mixture of premium vintage military, workwear and sportswear. This sold along side a handful of heritage brands, Levis Vintage Clothing, Belstaff, Sugar Canes, Buzz Rickson, Red Canoe and our in house label. The first season of the Klaxon brand, Spring/Summer'06, was small with only 5 styles. Since then the line has grown and accounts for nearly half the stores stock. Its following has equally grown prompting interest from fellow retailers wishing to carry the Klaxon Howl label in their own boutiques.

Until now the private label was just that. So it's with much excitement that we are now offering a seasonal wholesale collection available to buy for Fall/Winter'09.
